Organize Your Kitchen to Make Cooking Easier
By Lisa Zaslow, Founder of www.gothamorganizers.com

When you’re new to cooking, making a béarnaise sauce – or even making breakfast – can seem daunting enough.

But finding the correct pan doesn’t have to be difficult. As a professional organizer – and the daughter of a caterer – I’ve organized countless kitchens. Follow these key tips to create a kitchen that’s easy to cook in.

Clear the clutter

Ancient spices, lid-less Tupperware, decorative but dysfunctional serving platters, gadgets and appliances you never use - clear out the stuff you don’t use to make room for the ingredients and tools that you’ll use most often. Keep counters clear so you have room to cook. Want to ensure that you’ll cook more? Toss your stash of take-out menus!

Make it easy to reach the essentials

Store the spices, staples, pots, pans and gadgets that you use regularly in your easiest-to-reach places: the most convenient drawers, cabinets, even right on the counter. Put tongs, wooden spoons, and spatulas in a crock next to the stove so you can grab them instantly as you cook. Store things you rarely use (like the giant cake stand) in out-of-the-way cabinets, like the one above the fridge.

Group similar things together

This makes it easy to find what you need. Organize gadgets by function – cutting, measuring, serving. Keep similar foods together – spices, canned goods, grains and pasta. Get creative: you can create a baking station, a breakfast bar, a soup section, or a snack area.

Store things near where they are used

Arrange your stuff to make the best use of your space. Make it easy to unload the dishwasher, to reach for ingredients while cooking, and to grab a potholder when you need to get a hot pan out of the oven. Want to make more smoothies and drink less soda? Keep the blender on the counter and put the pop on a high shelf.

Be inspired

Post recipes you want to try on your fridge and keep your favorite cookbooks handy. Once your kitchen is well organized you’ll want to use it more!
